Why Your School Website Isn't Producing Enrollments - School Info

Your school website can look great, contain all the right information and still do very little to help enrollment.

That’s because prospective families aren’t visiting simply to gather information. They’re trying to decide whether your school belongs on their shortlist. Your website needs to help them make that decision.

Most School Websites Are Built to Provide Information

School websites have to serve many audiences. Current parents need calendars, announcements, staff directories, portals, forms and policies. Teachers and administrators need information posted. Prospective families need something very different.

They’re evaluating the school.

This is where many websites fall short. They contain everything a parent could possibly want to know but don’t establish a clear hierarchy around what a prospective family needs to understand first.

Your Homepage Doesn’t Need to Explain Everything

The homepage should establish the big picture quickly.

What kind of school is this? Who does it serve? What makes it different? Why should I continue exploring? What should I do next?

Once those questions are answered, the rest of the website can provide depth.

The problem comes when announcements, programs, mission statements, calendars, administrative links and dozens of buttons all compete for equal attention. Everything may be important to someone, but everything isn’t equally important to the prospective parent at that moment.

A good website simplifies how the school is presented without oversimplifying the school itself.

Give Prospective Families Their Own Path

Current families generally arrive knowing what they need. Prospective families are exploring.

Their path should help them understand the school, see evidence, answer common questions and take an appropriate next step. That may be requesting information, scheduling a tour, attending an open house or speaking with admissions.

“Enroll Now” isn’t necessarily the right call to action for someone who discovered the school 90 seconds ago.

Calls to action should recognize where the family is in the decision process and make the next reasonable step obvious.

The same principle applies to forms. Schools should collect the information admissions actually needs without making an initial inquiry unnecessarily difficult, particularly on a mobile device.

Show Families Why They Should Believe You

A website shouldn’t simply make claims.

If the school promises individual attention, demonstrate it. If its programs are distinctive, show them. If community is central to the experience, let families see the people who create that community.

Real photography, student and parent stories, videos, program examples, outcomes and teacher stories can all turn general claims into something families can evaluate.

This also helps differentiate the school. Generic school language makes competing options sound alike. Specific evidence makes the experience tangible.

Your Website Needs to Connect With Marketing and Admissions

A campaign doesn’t end when someone clicks an advertisement. The page they reach is part of the campaign.

If the ad creates a compelling reason to visit and then sends the parent to a generic homepage that doesn’t continue the story, momentum is lost. Purpose-built landing pages can connect a specific campaign, audience or enrollment need directly to the information and action most relevant to that visitor.

The same connection needs to continue after the inquiry. Admissions should know what brought the family into the process and continue building on that interest.

That’s when the website stops being an isolated communication tool and becomes part of an enrollment system.

Measure Whether the Website Is Moving Families Forward

Website traffic matters, but it isn’t the goal.

Schools should understand which pages, campaigns and traffic sources generate meaningful admissions actions such as inquiries, calls and tour requests. Ideally, those leads can then be followed farther to determine which ultimately become enrolled students.

Without that connection, a school may know which campaign generated the cheapest click without knowing which campaign contributed to enrollment.

SchoolInfo.org approaches school websites from this enrollment perspective. The objective isn’t simply a more attractive site. It’s a website that helps the right families understand the school, see why it may be right for them and confidently take the next step.

If this feels familiar, it’s worth a conversation.
